The most famous resurgence in Villafranca is the “Fontanin“, in the Sant’Andrea area near the border with the Municipality of Povegliano Veronese, between the Corte Palazzina Vecchia and the Corte Gazolo. The area is located at 45m a.s.l. and it is delimited by the river Tione dei Monti (north) and by the Channel of the Agricultural Consortium (west).
The resurgence of the Fontanin creates the Fosso Nuovo, directed eastward and southward to the fields of Grezzano. The bottom of the resurgence is at around 6m from the plan of the fields and it is mostly supplied by the groundwater that represents a huge water reservoir within the alluvial deposits of the plain of the Verona area. A certain amount of water also originates from the infiltrations coming from the Tione, but above all, as far as the Fontanin is concerned, from an Artesian well that takes water from a pressure stratum.
Over the last few years the vegetation of the area has been deteriorated. Up to 1960s it was considered the “swimming pool” of the people from Villafranca, and even today, when it is really hot, people looking for some relief from the summer heatwave come here.
Near the Fontanin you can admire the statue of St. Andrew (now unfortunately damaged by vandalism), on the site where once stood the church of Sant’Andrea al Fontanile.
